What Is My Leadership Style? Discover Which of These Leadership Style Types Is Most Like You

1. Authoritarian leadership

Do you like to take charge? An authoritarian leader holds on to as much authority as possible. These leaders tend to make all of the decisions and resist input from others. There are definitely times when this leadership style can be helpful, such as when there is a quick decision that needs to be made, an emergency that must be handled quickly, or a problem that should be fixed by someone with expertise. However, if this leadership style is used long-term, there is not much accountability, creativity, or team synergy. 


2. Participative Leadership

Do you value the input of everyone around you? A participative leader invites those in subordinate roles to participate in making decisions. They make sure to create an open dialogue about the good and bad of the situation, even if it is not glamorous. This leader is often referred to as “approachable” because of their openness with their team. A downside to this style is that it can take longer to make decisions because  all of the team is encouraged to share their opinion. This type of leader should take caution not to overshare personal issues within the team.


3. Delegative leadership

Do you like sharing the workload? A delegative leader (also commonly referred to as a “laissez-faire leader) focuses on delegating tasks to various team members. Employees under this leader feel a sense of responsibility because of their freedom and authority given on a project. However, some employees may feel confused or disconnected because of the separation of tasks. Delegative leaders find they have an easier time managing time because they are sharing the workload, which can increase productivity.


4. Transactional leadership

Are you goal-driven? A transactional leader focuses on specific goals and uses rewards and consequences to motivate their team. Their strength is acting as supervisor because they communicate the chain of command and expected outcomes clearly. Of all the leadership style types, this form of leadership is especially helpful in times of crisis when the “norm” must be maintained. However, if not carried out well, this style can be detrimental in helping employees feel valued and trusted to make their own decisions without feeling micromanaged.


5. Transformational leadership

Is inspiration and passion important to you? A transformational leader has a strong sense of vision and uses that to encourage the team. If this leader can help employees feel tied to the mission of the task, the employee turnover rate tends to be lower. Employees under this leadership style report that they feel a higher morale and sense of meaning in their work. This form of leadership may be more time consuming than the other leadership style types because it requires the leader to make connections with each individual on the team.
